Parents Are Not Always Right

We are in this world because of our parents and we are well aware of the fact that we should respect them. They always think good of us regardless of our behavior and attitude towards them. They give us instructions and advice pretty often and we have a belief that they are always right. They want to see us succeed. But are they always right?

Well, Indoctrination should be the greatest problem when we talk about parenting. Indoctrination by our parents to believe their dogma should not be acceptable because this one thing has been the biggest problem in the world  which is causing violence, hatred and bigotry.

Teaching a child to accept a set of beliefs uncritically is not good.  A child should be given a chance to think free and become a critical thinker but parents indoctrinate them.

For example a child born on a muslim family grows up becoming a muslim and same goes to other children from other religions. They are never given a chance to doubt about religious beliefs or any other particular belief system about their parents. They were told that anything their parents teach them is correct. So they will never figure out mistakes in their parents belief system.

So a Muslim child thinks that his religion is the only true religion in this world and others will go to hell but a child from another religion will have another set of beliefs which will bring conflict between them.

Parents should give their children the chance to access their experience and knowledge, but also realize that their children aren’t them, they aren’t going to live the same way, nor will they want to be told everything, kids need to learn for themselves, even if it may hurt them, physically or emotionally and that will make them free of indoctrination and they become free and critical thinker.

No parent can be right all of the time (parents are not always right) because they would have to be perfect and there is not one person in this world that can truly claim to be perfect. Parents make mistakes, can have bad judgement at time and don’t always understand how different the world is now from when they grew up but lets face it they also have that much more experience than we do.

A lot of what we go through growing up they have been there done that so I do not think its right to completely disregard what they have to say, but that doesn’t mean that every time they will have the right answer. Either way I do believe because of there experience there opinion/advice should be respected.

The world isn’t a perfect place. Now whether they are right most of the time or not is a different story, but, the fact is that parents can be just as stubborn as kids.  When they think they are right, they really think that they are right.

And so it boils down to this: the more knowledge we have access to, the more sure we are that we have knowledge that our don’t parents have, and the more we think it is our right to question our parents. So it gives the impression that extra knowledge can rival the experience of our parents.

  1. Great title. But some of the kids are getting the wrong impression and are too quick to share it on their FB statuses….

  2. Very good post.

You rightly said that parents have much more experience, but the problem with experience is that it is rooted in the past and can become outdated, and even counterproductive.

Also relying solely on experience without acquiring new knowledge day after day, without ever updating your point of view is not good. In fact, it is a sign of lack of confidence, a sign of fear. It is the fear that comes with the realization that nothing is permanent.

Life is all about making mistakes and learning from those mistakes. But we can easily learn the lessons through our mistake with the help of supportive people like our parents, guardians and our friends. Parents are not always right in such thing which results in their child to go against their parents.

Umm… What if they listen to what their child is trying to say. It would make their bond stronger. Right? But no, parents think that their child is wrong and whatever they think, whatever they say is right.
Here, I am discussing 5 major issues.
    Strictness:

Yes, I do believe that parenting is not an easy job but being strict parents is not the right thing. Parents think that being strict will keep their child on the right path and grow their child as a responsible person but they never think that it can also force their child to go against them.
    Level of thinking:

Not everyone thinks the same way as others do. Isn’t it? Definitely! However, parents think that they are always right but they only speak about what they have experienced. They never think as their child do. Parents are not always right. They differ in the level of thinking and never focuses on the passion of their child, and convince them to do what they have suggested them. So what about the passion of their child? Doesn’t he/she have the right to dream? Should they stop dreaming?
    Thinks of the society:

Do we live for the society? Or we are born to fulfill others dreams? No! Then why parents say “Don’t do this, just think what society will think?” It’s not bad if anyone wants to be a politician. People think that those who get into politics become corrupt. But I think it is the mentality of people to bound their dreams instead of fulfilling it.
    Comparing their child:

You know what a child dislikes the most? It is the comparison of themselves with the child of others. It is the only reason which forces every child to keep secrets from their parents. I guess it has become a trend to compare your child. If a parent listens from their friend that his son has got A grade in all subject all of a sudden they start comparing them with their child. What the heck? If everyone was able to secure A grade then there was no competition. I was wondering that parents always compare their child but what if a child compares his parent?
Taking decision according to their perspective:

The generation gap is the serious matter. Children should follow their opinions because they better know what suits best for them because they have their personal ideas, hobbies, and interests.
Those who always lead by their parents end up by regretting not following their dreams. It happens when things cannot be changed. Parents should listen to what their child wants to do and support him to fulfill his dreams
