It’s important to plan and consider making attainable goals to move further in your work, but I think the same approach is a bad idea while planning everyday life.
I usually never plan things. I don’t know what I’m going to do tomorrow. Heck, I don’t even know what I’ll do today. If something pops up, I move towards it. However if nothing pops up, then I have my own works to complete.
It’s a win-win situation for me everyday. If I have nothing to do, then I get my work done. If something pops up then I get to have a good time and experience.
I have set of principles and goals that overrides every decision I make. The goal works as a filter when I make decisions.
For example, if I have a goal to create a WordPress theme, I always keep it in top of my hierarchy table. If someone asks me if I want to go out and play, I always filter it through my goal, “Will going out to play help me on my goal to create a WordPress theme?”.
If the answer is no, I don’t go out and play, even if I want to.
That’s when I’m living by my principles. However, I’m also open to new experience that life brings. And for most of it, I operate without any plans.
Having plan and a goal for me are two different things. I don’t have any plans, but I have goals. I don’t have any plans for today, which means I’ll work on my goal until something pops up. In default I always work on my goal, and if something pops up, I move towards it.
It happened yesterday. I was doing my usual work when Rebecca suddenly called me. She called me at 11 AM and we were watching Need For Speed at 12 PM. We had no plans, but it was really fun. I didn’t even know that I’d go to watch a movie till 10:59 AM. And that’s what I like. It’s fun, exciting and unpredictable. It’s exciting to me because it’s like, ……. watch how your day unfolds.
Everyday is a story, I am just happy to see how it unfolds, instead of ruining it by making plans.
I don’t like planning before hand. It takes our excitement away before the event. If I knew we were going to watch movie a day before, I would have to wait for one whole day. I would be excited in the beginning and within the time of event, my excitement would fade away – which will make it less fun.
Having no plans means that every day is a surprise. Yesterday was a surprise to me. I didn’t knew I would watch a movie, but I did.
Of course, it’s hard to operate without plans while you have overwhelming amount of works to complete or goals to chase. It get’s messy. But, I’ve figured it’s not same with life.
I have plans for my goals, but I don’t have plans for my life. Meaning I don’t know what I’ll do, even today. I don’t know what I’ll do after I finish writing this. Maybe someone will call and I meet them. Maybe no one will call and I keep working on default mode. Whatever happens, it’s a win-win: either I get my work done, or I get to have a wonderful experience.

By the way, if you’re wondering why I have the picture of washroom, it’s because I have that place as a memory of the day. Once I see that picture, I remember that particular day – weird, I know.
