You Are You

Unknown Guy and Sunset
We notice people suicide when the stock market crashes. It’s because their sense of reality is the stock market. They view themselves as a part of stock market and if it collapses, their sense of reality is gone. And it doesn’t make sense to live in this world when their core sense of reality is taken away from them.

Most of us have superficial sense of reality. We view ourselves as something we do. But in reality, it’s who we are.

“You are not your job, you’re not how much money you have in the bank. You are not the car you drive. You’re not the contents of your wallet. You are not your fucking khakis. You are all singing, all dancing crap of the world.”

– Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club

Most people attach themselves with their status, accomplishments, degrees, bank balance, etc. But what they don’t realize is that it can be taken away from them anytime.

And when those things are taken away from them, what happens?

Their sense of reality crumbles. They struggle to figure who they are. In most cases, they become victim of depression and all sorts of mental illness. Some even suicide.

Due to this reason, it’s important that you realize you need to have a coherent sense of reality, and that it’s not something you do, instead it’s who you are.

On one level, it sets you free. You feel free that you are not all those things society has tried to force onto you. On another level, a deeper sense of reality is born where you are connected with your inner-self.

You are you!
